This is somewhat a deviation from the usual cosmetic surgery posts this blog regularly offers. But this is a great entry from a woman who believes that cosmetic surgery is not the answer. Marilyn Sewell wrote a blog entry entitled The Cosmetic Surgery Industry, and this is what she has to say.
It seems bizarre to me that women are paying $20,000 to get fat siphoned off their bellies while so many children from poor families are going to school hungry each day. Surely this must be the definition of "decadent."
The sad thing is that these women with too much money to spend are not filling the void with all this snipping and sewing, this sculpturing of their aging bodies. In fact, women who have had cosmetic surgery are three times as likely as their uncut peers to kill themselves. Depression can't be solved by a surgeon, no matter how skilled. A pretty nose doesn't give a life meaning, and a flat tummy is not the means to salvation.
While not all women undergo cosmetic surgery because of depression, some do. And this is where cosmetic surgeons conduct a thorough consultation with the patient concerned in order to discuss issues that might affect the course of the operation. Some surgeons even advise patients to get counseling first so that the former are in tip-top shape physically and emotionally before they go through the process.
Cosmetic surgery, as what Marilyn says, is not the answer to depression. And she is right. After all, it is wrong to make cosmetic surgery as an anti-depressant, though certain studies say it is. Women should not go under the knife because of that. They must not.
