  A native of the city of Chicago, Dr. Andrew Frankel is a world-renowned facial cosmetic surgeon. Extensively trained with respect to nasal surgery, he is also a board-certified surgeon in both Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (Ear Nose and Throat).

  Over the years, Dr. Frankel, who specializes in rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty, has been at the receiving end of recognitions for his work in the repair and revision of prior rhinoplasty patients, collapsed nose jobs, deviated septum surgery, corrective nose surgery, and collapsed nose repair. He is also quite adept at addressing any revision rhinoplasty issues that may arise.

  Graduating with Alpha Omega Alpha honors from medical school, Dr. Frankel has also won several awards for original research in the course of his five-year Otolaryngology residency at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary specializing in head and neck surgery. After this, he completed a one-year Fellowship under the auspices of the American Academy of Facial Plastic And Reconstructive Surgery, where he specialized exclusively in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.

  As a good surgeon usually does, Dr. Frankel has also taken time to share his knowledge and expertise with national and international surgeons through lectures. Since 1994, he has been an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California at Los Angeles, where he became the recipient of the "Outstanding Clinical Faculty Teaching Award". To top it all off, Dr. Frankel has also published material on a number of subjects, including, of course, rhinoplasty.

  Dr. Frankel still does clinical research work. As a matter of fact, he has been involved with several research trials conducted by the FDA. An active member of the National Domestic Violence Project, he also performs pro bono surgery on victims of abuse, nasal surgery included.

  He has also had a number of TV appearances, as well as having been featured in publications such as Allure and Self.

  Dr. Frankel considers revision rhinoplasty as his favorite procedure to perform, as he enjoys the challenges involved in diagnosing the cause of a particular deformity or problem. His dedication to correcting bad rhinoplasties as well as performing a patient’s first nose job with meticulous focus has resulted in many patients whose lives have been changed.

Board Certification
Is it peculiar that the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is not a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties?
Since 1933, specialty boards have been approved jointly by action of ABMS and the American Medical Association Council on Medical Education (AMA/CME). This determination begins with a review by the Liaison Committee for Specialty Boards (LCSB), an organization sponsored by ABMS and AMA/CME. The function of LCSB is to receive and evaluate applications for approval of new specialty boards according to standards and procedures agreed upon by both ABMS and AMA.
Anyone can set up a board, claim they are the best and sell you a certificate for $49.95. On the other hand, anyone can set up a board and apply rigorous criteria for certification, including difficult and irrelevant testing, in order to produce a barrier to entry into the market and thus control pricing. When surgeon's standardize their quality metrics and reporting methods, then results will speak for themselves and there will be no need to hide behind or advertise board status. I am not saying the ABCS falls into either of these categories, but it takes much more than a claim of board certification to establish quality in surgery.

What I am about to tell you is going to probably save you a whole lot of grief and heart ache; and perhaps several revision surgeries.... Unlike what most Plastic Surgeons try to tell you and make you think, most plastic surgeons after they complete their plastic surgery residency hardly have had enough experience in Cosmetic Surgery to be qualified to do Cosmetic Surgery independently. Most of these doctors after they finish their residency are lucky if they have done a hand full of cosmetic surgeries (such as Nose Jobs; Breast Lifts; Face lifts, liposuction and etc.)on their own. That is why, they are not qualified to sit for the Board Certification examination by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is the ONLY board that represents Qualified and Fellowship trained Cosmetic Surgeons who have had the experience of performing hundreds of cases of Cosmetic Surgery during their training. If a surgeon is in fact a plastic surgeon or another Board Certified Surgeon and then completes a one or two year full fellowship in cosmetic Surgery and proceeds to apply to sit for the examination of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, only then he may be qualified to take that examination. It is a very difficult examination and only 50% or so of the doctors pass it the first time and it includes both a written and an oral examination. Check out the Required Qualifications of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery for yourself and you will truly be amazed.

Did your plastic surgeon tell you that? Is he qualified to be a member at all? This is an amazing organization with thousands of members and the largest organization representing the specialists in the field of cosmetic Surgery.
