One of the most fascinating discoveries in the field of medicine and cosmetic surgery is this toxin called Botox. Once feared and despised (it’s poison after all), this lowly toxin has climbed up the ladder and became something that even those who have Bell’s Palsy would surely welcome.
Today, Botox has or is about to conquer yet another medical territory. And it again has something to do with relieving people of some serious maladies. This time around, Botox is targeting overactive bladders.
ABC 4 News has this to say:
An estimated 34-million Americans suffer from an overactive bladder. Most do not seek treatment for their incontinence. Others have tried medications, patches, exercises and diet changes to no avail. Now there is new hope; hope that can be found in a vial a Botox.
"The Botox goes to the nerves and it actually effects the nerves of the muscles and keeps the muscles from releasing little tiny proteins that cause the muscles of the bladder to contract when you don't want it to."
The procedure for the treatment of an overactive bladder through Botox only takes 15 to 20 minutes. For treating the bladder with Botox, doctors put a small scope up through the urethra opening and into the bladder. Doctors consider this procedure a major breakthrough in medicine, and after using Botox for six months, patient results have been extremely positive.
