Women with sagging breasts can now have the chance to bring back the perkiness of their breasts through a cosmetic surgery procedure called a breast lift.
A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to give sagging breasts a lift. The ‘lifting’ is done by removing excess skin and by repositioning the nipples and breast tissues. It can also be performed by using breast implants to help restore the breasts to their natural size and shape.
The procedure involves creating an incision around the areola. The incision vertically extends downward and along the lower crease of the breast. After this, the cosmetic surgeon can now remove the excess skin, and can now move the nipple and areola to a much higher position. The extensiveness of the incisions depends largely on the sagging condition of the patient. Minimal sagging and relatively small breasts requires less extensive incisions.
A breast lift surgery typically takes at most three hours to complete, and it can be done using either a general anesthesia or a combination of local anesthesia and sedation. The procedure may be done in a surgeon’s office-based facility, in a hospital, or in an outpatient surgical center.
Bruising, swelling, numbness and discomfort may occur after surgery. This is just normal though, and this doesn’t have to cause much worries. Patients may be able to return to work within one week or more, though more vigorous activities must be avoided for four weeks. The scars will fade after several months or more. The duration of the results can vary as age, gravity, weight changes, and pregnancy can result in new sagging.
Though breast lift surgery is considered to be safe with thousands of successful operations in its track record, there are still potential complications to consider. These include adverse anesthesia reactions, excessive scarring, infection, loss or change of feeling in the nipples or breast, skin loss, and unevenly positioned nipples.
Taking all these considerations, breast lift candidates should be physically healthy and realistic in their expectations. Women who have small, sagging breasts, which have lost their skin elasticity due to pregnancy, nursing or weight loss, often achieve the best results.
