What was considered before as absurdity is now becoming a popular practice. Today, women, even the young ones, are considering genital cosmetic surgery.

It was only recently that Jenna Jameson, a popular adult film star has had vaginoplasty to tighten and beautify her privates. And just recently too, a survey in Australia has revealed that women seek labiaplasty at such a young age. Women are getting anxious about their appearance and even their genitals need to look presentable in order for them to feel good about themselves. Now, we can expect that there would be a dramatic increase of the number of women who will undergo genital cosmetic surgery this year.

However, doctors are concerned about the current trend. Physicians warn that women should be cautious about the risks of cosmetic genital surgery. They believe that this particular issue might be fuelling women’s insecurity about their bodies.

Demand for cosmetic genital surgery (genitoplasty) is increasing and the number of labial reductions in the NHS has doubled in the past five years. This is indicative of how women view genitoplasty as a way to boost their self-esteem, thus, they flock to their surgeons and request for this procedure.

However, doctors Lih Mei Liao and Sarah Creighton, from UCL Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Institute for Women’s Health, argue that decisions about surgically altering genitalia may be based on misguided assumptions about normal dimensions. Liao and Creighton are both writing in the British Medical Journal.

Liao and Creighton stressed that surgery carries risks such as loss of sensitivity, and the long-term effects are unclear. They added that the increased demand for genitoplasty may reflect the twisted view of women towards what’s normal and what is idealized in terms of the appearance of their privates.
