Cosmetic surgeons are pissed of at the way cosmetic surgery has been promoted in Melbourne, Australia. According to The Age, there’s new promotional scheme that treats cosmetic surgery procedures as “generally simple day procedures” and includes advertisement for fast flexible finance from loans company Mediplan.
The companies involved say their promotion is "helpful" but it has angered the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons by including its website in the pamphlet.
"Promotions like this that are designed to make people rush into cosmetic surgery will never have our endorsement," said society president Bill Cockburn.
"Surgery is a serious undertaking that needs careful consideration. It's not something that you just pick up the phone and sign up for while you're flipping through your mail."
Dr. Cockburn said he was particularly concerned about people with no medical training providing patients with information on the benefits of cosmetic surgery.
Cosmetic surgeons believe that advertising which glosses over the reality of surgery by promising great results with very minimal risks is a form of exploitation of the patient’s vulnerability.
However, though surgeons appeared to be concerned with the current situation, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and the state medical boards seem to be unaffected at all by this new promotional style.
