Cosmetic surgery gets rid of antidepressants

There is an interesting study conducted by plastic surgeon Bruce Freedman about the effect cosmetic surgery has on self-esteem, thereby helping people get off antidepressant medications.

We all know that people who have gone through cosmetic surgery procedures feel better about themselves. When the excess fat disappears and the wrinkles fade, everyone’s happy. Who wouldn’t? Thus, it is of no surprise to hear that people become more confident and a lot happier as their looks greatly improved.

Dr. Freedman is not satisfied with qualitative measurements, so he led a study that would qualitatively support the notion that cosmetic surgery can boost a person’s mood. And as a result of that boost, taking in antidepressants, which by the way are quite harmful, won’t be necessary.

CBSNews has this to say about this particular study:

Freedman and his colleagues evaluated 362 men and women, most of them middle-aged women, who had undergone cosmetic surgeries such as facelifts, breast augmentation, breast reduction, and tummy tucks. Before their surgeries, 301 patients (83 percent) were not taking antidepressants; the other 61 patients (17 percent) were taking the medications.

The two groups, he says, were similar in age, sex, and types of surgery performed. Six months after the surgery, 19 of the 61 patients on antidepressants had stopped the medication, a decrease of 31 percent.

Fifteen (5 percent) of the 301 patients who weren't taking antidepressants before the surgery began to take them within six months after they had surgery; Freedman says that figure is consistent with what would be expected in the general population.

The result of the study just reinforce the age-old notion that cosmetic surgery really helps in forging confidence in those who have been inflicted with depression and low self-esteem.
