    Ethnic rhinoplasty is one of the most challenging procedures to ever confront a plastic surgeon. Normal rhinoplasty is already challenging enough. Add the burden of preserving ethnicity to the equation, and it is amazing that surgeons are still able to hold their composure.

    The good news is, surgeons can now confidently cater to their African-American clients by offering ethnic rhinoplasty that truly preserves the ethnicity of the patient and helping him or her boost self-confidence.

    A groundbreaking study that involved 75 African American patients was conducted by Dr. Oleh Slupchynskyi, founder and director of The Aesthetic Facial Surgery Institute of New York and New Jersey. The study statistically proves that a unique three-tiered surgical approach in rhinoplasty can guarantee the preservation of the patient’s ethnicity while improving the aesthetics of the nose.

    Dr. Slupchynskyi has this to say about this development:

    Rhinoplasty, a procedure that was sometimes used in an attempt to make an African American nose look more Caucasian, has evolved a great deal as societal understanding of ethnic beauty and surgical techniques for ethnic features have improved.

    A surgeon performing African American rhinoplasty should be aware of, and be able to distinguish, the various standards of beauty present in different ethnic groups; only then s/he can work to enhance ethnic features, as opposed to changing them to fit inappropriate standards of beauty.

    In the study, all the 75 subjects all wanted these four improvements:

    1)    nasal dorsal augmentation for inadequate nasal dorsal height;
    2)    elevation of a low or depressed nasal-frontal angle;
    3)    refinement of a poorly defined, rounded or bulbous nasal tip;
    4)    reduction of nasal width both horizontally and vertically.

    The three-tiered approach was then used on all the patients and the results were very satisfactory. This particular approach is designed to enhance the equilibrium of the nose and face by increasing dorsal height, lessens nasal flare, and increases tip refinement and projection, while maintaining ethnic attributes.
