Eyes that look tired, puffy, and hooded are not pleasant to look at. This unpleasant condition is caused by excessive skin and fat of the upper eyelids. More often than not, wrinkling and fat bulges may also be apparent in the lower eyelids, and they make the situation worse.
Those who experience this similar condition may consider having an eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty. This facial surgery procedure is intended to reshape the upper and lower eyelid by removing excess tissue and thereby improving the appearance of sagging upper eyelids and puffy lower eye bags.
Like some other plastic surgery procedures, eyelid surgery can be performed in an outpatient setup. It takes between one to three hours to complete using either general anesthesia or a local anesthesia with sedation. The latter option is the one most commonly used.
Blepharoplasty is performed by creating external incisions along the natural skin lines of the eyelids. The areas commonly used to create these incisions are the creases of the upper lids and below the lashes of the lower lids, or from the inside surface of the lower eyelid. This is done to avoid visible scars after recovery. Once the incisions are made, the excess skin and fat can now be removed.
After surgery, swelling and bruising are expected discomforts. They will subside after a week or two. However, it can take up to several months before the eyelid surgery result becomes evident.
Other discomforts that this procedure may cause include excessive tearing, sensitivity to light, and dryness and burning of the eyes. Plastic surgeons advise patients to keep their heads elevated for several days with cold compress on the affected area to expedite the healing process.
To avoid excessive bruising, a laser is used to remove the excess fat, skin and muscle of the upper eyelids. Moreover, laser resurfacing can also be employed to shrink and smoothen the lower eyelid skin and thereby improve the wrinkles and fine lines on such area.
Physically healthy men and women with realistic expectations are the best candidates for eyelid surgery. Though this facial surgery procedure can be performed on any age, typical clients belong to the thirties and up age bracket.
