No matter what type of weight loss surgery you have undergone - gastric bypass or gastric banding, one thing is for certain - you should follow a gastric bypass diet afterwards. That’s necessary because you must treat your “new” smaller stomach gently to ensure its proper healing and to avoid overeating.
Gastric bypass diet has four phases – liquid diet, puree diet, soft and semi solid foods diet, solid foods diet. Last four phase turns into your regular diet for the rest of your life.
Gastric bypass diet phase one starts in the hospital immediately after the surgery. It includes clear liquids such as water, broths and unsweetened juices, as well as some diet drinks. You should sip 2-3 ounces at a time. Be extra careful and sip slowly. Remember - pay attention to your feelings of fullness.
Phase two (also called Blenderized diet) starts 2-3 weeks after the surgery. It includes liquid or semi-liquid foods, such as thinned and smooth applesauce, yogurt, and mashed potatoes. You should eat about 4 to 6 meals a day. Also includes sample menus and foods to avoid (crunchy foods such as peanut butter, and sweets).
Phase three starts 4 weeks after the gastric bypass surgery. Includes soft and semi-solid foods mashed with a fork. Eat no more than 4-6 ounces per meal. This phase includes 4 meals a day, which you should take at small bites and chew very well. Also includes sample menus and foods to avoid such as dry or red meat, and crunchy foods are not allowed yet.
Gastric bypass diet phase four starts about 5-6 weeks after the surgery and it will turn into your regular meal plan for the rest of your life. It may sound scary but it is OK, and you will get used to it and like it.
At first you will not be able to eat all your favorite foods you used to eat before. It’s OK, don’t worry. Many people have such problems at first, especially with red meat and bread. When you start eating the solid foods you must reduce your meals to 3 per day. Eat regularly. Do not skip meals, otherwise you won’t have the amount of proteins you need daily (about 60 grams of proteins).
To make sure you eat right after the surgery, you must consult a nutritionist about the gastric bypass diet before starting it on your own. Find out more details about gastric bypass diet restrictions and recommendations.
