Laser resurfacing, sometimes called laser peel, is one of the newest procedures in cosmetic surgery that is getting a considerable amount of attention. The procedure involves the use of lasers in removing damaged or wrinkled skin.
Not only is laser resurfacing used to minimize the appearance of fine lines around the mouth and eyes, it is also effective in the treating areas where uneven pigmentation persist, as well as treating facial scars.
Laser resurfacing may be done as a stand-alone procedure or it can be accompanied with a blepharoplasty or a facelift to achieve better results. Compared with other resurfacing methods, laser resurfacing produces less bleeding, bruising and post-operative discomfort. This explains why most people prefer this one than to improve their looks.
Normally, laser resurfacing is performed in an outpatient setting. It can be done in a surgeon’s office, in a hospital or in an outpatient surgical center. Local anesthesia is the one most cases, though general anesthesia may also be used. The procedure would take at most one and a half hours to finish depending on the size of the area to be treated.
After surgery, mild swelling and discomfort is a normal effect. Pain medications may be given by the cosmetic surgeon to the patient for pain relief. Ice packs may also be used to help the swelling subside.
Redness or pinkness of the skin may be around for several weeks to several months depending on the kind of laser treatment received. Patient treated with Erbium laser usually has to wait for six weeks before the pinkness disappears. On the other hand, CO2 laser-treated patients have to wait much longer at three months. Patients can go back to work after two weeks but strenuous activities and sun exposure must be avoided for several months.
Complications that may arise with laser resurfacing include infections, scarring, burns, and abnormal changes in the color of the skin. The patient needs to choose the right cosmetic surgeon to perform the procedure in order to avoid these things from happening. These complications will only emerge if the procedure is not done properly, so the choice of a cosmetic surgeon is of utmost importance.
