People are getting surgery to enlarge their butts

More and more people are actually getting more and more concerned about the appearance of their buttocks. Yes, buttocks. Not the face, nor the tummy but the ass. It seems that everyone has acquired the desire to be the next Jennifer Lopez. Butt-conscious folks are flocking to plastic surgeon clinics to demand a Brazillian Butt Lift.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of butt lift procedures administered increased 283 percent nationwide between 2000 and 2005 from 1,356 to 5,193.

Dr. Anthony Griffin, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon who is one of the pioneers of the Brazillian Butt Lift said that the most popular from of buttock enhancement or gluteal augmentation is the one that involves taking fat from the abdomen through liposuction. The fat is then injected into the muscles of the rear end to make the area look firmer and larger.

The demand for butt lifts does not just come from West Coast women or those from South American or African cultures. It looks like every woman in the world knows that a curvy bottom is just as essential as a bigger bust line.

"We are getting more and more demand for fat injections," said Dr. Richard Ehrlichman , a consultant in plastic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and a plastic surgeon in private practice in Wellesley.

Brazillian Butt Lift does not come cheap though. Depending on how long the surgery takes, it can cost around $12,000 to $18,000 for the fat transfer procedure. Moreover, this type of operation is not covered by insurance so the patient needs to shell out quite a big amount for the operation to be realized.

The procedure also allows plastic surgeons to put add-ons to the treatment. Aside from the fat injections, they can also make use of silicone implants for a more defined contour. However, the implants can become quite hard in the long run so patients may not buy the idea.

Still, the increase of the number of patients asking for the procedure is remarkable. And it is expected to increase this year as more and more people have already considered cosmetic surgery as one of their options to a younger-looking and healthy existence.

Unlike what most Plastic Surgeons try to tell you and make you think, most plastic surgeons after they complete their plastic surgery residency hardly have had enough experience in Cosmetic Surgery to be qualified to do Cosmetic Surgery independently. Most of these doctors after they finish their residency are lucky if they have done a hand full of cosmetic surgeries (such as Nose Jobs; Breast Lifts; Face lifts, liposuction and etc.)on their own. That is why, they are not qualified to sit for the Board Certification examination by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery is the ONLY board that represents Qualified and Fellowship trained Cosmetic Surgeons who have had the experience of performing hundreds of cases of Cosmetic Surgery during their training. If a surgeon is in fact a plastic surgeon or another Board Certified Surgeon and then completes a one or two year full fellowship in cosmetic Surgery and proceeds to apply to sit for the examination of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, only then he may be qualified to take that examination. It is a very difficult examination and only 50% or so of the doctors pass it the first time and it includes both a written and an oral examination.
