Sagging of breasts not linked to nursing

The common notion that new moms have when they start breastfeeding is that there breasts are going to sag. This is perhaps the main reason why milk supplements are everywhere since mothers are somewhat scared to breast-feed their kids since it might cause their figure to deteriorate. Not to mention the fact that a breast lift surgery, which is designed to give sagging breasts a lift, is quite expensive.

Now, a new study is here to suggest that the preconceived notion that breast-feeding is bad for a mother’s figure is not true at all. Good news for moms at last.

Dr. Brian Rinker, 37-year-old and lead author of the study, showed that breast-feeding does not increase breast sagging. The study was presented at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ annual meeting in Baltimore just recently.

Rinker’s study became quite popular among non-surgeons. In fact, it has drawn international media attention. It was noticed by web sites and blogs connected with The Wall Street Journal, the Chicago Tribune, and CBS News. It also appeared on an Indian website and even on Spanish website too.

"I do a lot of research and this is the first study that has been picked up by the lay press," Rinker said.

The study had 132 women who had come to UK HealthCare Cosmetic Surgery Associates interviewed. The study gathered significant details such as medical history, body mass index, pre-pregnancy cup size and whether they smoked.

The study reveals that ninety-three percent of the women interviewed had been pregnant at least once and 58 percent had breast-fed at least one child. But it showed no correlation between the degree of sagging between women who had breast-fed and those who had not.

Rinker found out through the study that sagging is mainly linked to age, number of pregnancies and cigarette smoking. The study disproves the idea that breast-feeding promotes sagging.
