“Scarless” Breast Augmentation

Breast underneathBreast augmentation is getting more and more popular. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, a total of 364,610 procedures were performed last year, a nine percent rise from 2004.

But just like any type of surgery, breast augmentation surgery leaves scars, and visible ones at that. Traditional approaches to the procedure involve making incisions, and therefore leaving scars, right on the breasts or in the armpits.

However, there now exists an alternative for those who aren’t keen on letting on that they’ve had their breasts enhanced. The procedure is called TUBA, which stands for transumbilical breast augmentation. It is a new and rapidly evolving technique which results in virtually “scarless” breast augmentations.

Transumbilical breast augmentation, also known as belly button breast augmentation, involves the insertion of breast implants by way of the umbilical region of the body. Instead of visible scars on the breast or armpit, the procedure only leaves an inconspicuous scar in the navel, away from the breasts.

The procedure begins with a small incision in the belly button’s inner folds. Through this incision, a slender instrument is then guided under the skin to a location behind the breast tissue. The next step in the operation is the insertion into the area of a tissue expander, which creates a pocket of space where the saline implant will be placed. Upon verification of the size and location of the pocket, an empty saline implant will be inserted into the said pocket, then filled with a sterile saline solution to the desired size. Absorbable stitches will then close the incision.

Aside from the minimal scarring, another advantage of TUBA is the relatively short operative time of 30-45 minutes. On top of that, there is very little tissue trauma, lesser risk of injury to the sensory nerves of the nipple and breast, and much faster recovery time.

TUBA, however, is not for everyone. Those with drooping or sagging breasts are not advised to undergo the procedure, as TUBA only augments the breasts, not lift them. Candidates also need to have enough breast tissue to achieve a “natural” look after surgery, especially if the implant is to be placed above the muscle.

And just like any other surgical procedure, TUBA disadvantages also exist. So be sure to check them out before making a decision to undergo the procedure or not.
