Probably influenced by the massive support cosmetic surgery reality shows such Dr. 90210 and Extreme Makeover are getting in the United States, Spain, Europe's biggest cosmetic surgery market, has just launched its new cosmetic surgery show called Cambio Radical. The problem is, the reaction of the Spanish community towards the show was quite opposite to what the US reality shows have been getting. There was a barrage of criticisms coming from consumer groups, feminists and doctors who are appalled at the new program.
Cambio Radical is a reality show in which mostly female participants are given free tummy tucks, nose jobs and other surgical procedures. This seems to be an attractive venue for women who want to have an expensive procedure done without having to pay for the high cost. However, critics don't have the same perspective.
Ruben Sanchez, spokesman for the consumer rights organization FACUA, said that they feel the reality program is an attack on the dignity of women. He also added that it presents a vision of cosmetic surgery as though it were the same as going shopping in the supermarket.
Feminists groups also expressed their antagonism towards the new cosmetic surgery show. They call the program sexist and degrading, especially that most of the participants are women. The country's federation of doctors are also equally concerned.
Javier de Benito, president-elect of the International Plastic Surgery Society and consultant to the show, was quite surprised at such an outrage. “It's a very professional, respectful programme,” he said.
