Tucking It In

Girl's tummySome people do a thousand abdominal crunches a day, then add hundreds of daily sit-ups just to make sure. They eat right, and never touch sodas and beer. Yet excess baggage still manages to cling around their waists.

Attaining a flat and tight tummy is a pretty tall order for both men and women. When working out, most pay closer attention to getting those gorgeous abs. Still, it is a medical fact that some people do have large fat deposits or loose abdominal skin that just won't respond to diet or exercise, no matter how well-planned or intense.

It is this realization that drives some to undergo abdominoplasty. More commonly known as a “tummy tuck”, this surgical procedure involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen so as to tighten the abdominal wall muscles.

A person can choose to go through a complete abdominoplasty or just opt for a partial abdominoplasty. A full tummy tuck generally takes 2 to 5 hours, while a partial one will only take 1-2 hours of a patient’s time.

But like any other surgical procedure, abdominoplasty has its side effects and possible risks. Patients could experience numbness of abdominal skin, swelling, temporary pain, bruising, swelling and constant tiredness for weeks or even months on end. They also run the risk of bleeding under the skin flap, infection, blood clots, or even poor healing that ends up in conspicuous scarring or skin loss.

Fully recovering from a tummy tuck usually takes about weeks, or even months, depending on your physical condition. Those who underwent abdominoplasty in tiptop shape generally recuperate faster, and could even return to work in two weeks.

With the generally excellent results, as evidenced by these photographs, abdominoplasty has become quite a popular procedure, especially to those who have undergone gastric bypass surgery.

The long-term results from a tummy tuck are generally excellent. Just follow your surgeon’s orders about resuming physical activity, watch your weight, get on with your well-planned diet, and exercise regularly and you’ll be fine.
