The UK Department of Health has asked the cosmetic surgery industry to work on formulating safety measures in the cosmetic use of Botox and dermal fillers. This challenge was accepted by the Independent Health Advisory Services (IHAS), which will take the lead in setting up a self-regulatory scheme.

The Government’s move to encourage regulation over non-surgical treatments was prompted by the increasing number of incompetent medical spas that offer injectable fillers to clients. It has been noted that dermal fillers should be administered by qualified physicians alone in order to avoid risks and complications. However, it seems that this has never been followed.

The IHAS will now begin to draw up proposals in order to create a scheme to protect clients from improper use of intectable fillers.

    Health Minister Lord Hunt said:

"Cosmetic surgery providers have shown real commitment to improving levels of quality and safety in this area and so I have decided to ask the industry to take the lead in further improving standards. I am very pleased that they have accepted this challenge."

The Health Minister also announced that a review to examine levels of quality and safety shall be undertaken once the rules and regulations have been established.

Meanwhile, Sally Taber of the IHAS also expressed her determination to push through with the plan. She stressed that the IHAS is prepared to take the lead in setting up a self-regulatory scheme and look forward to working with other key stakeholders and in particular patient and consumer organizations.

The Government has once considered statutory regulation of non-surgical treatments as per recommendation of the Expert Group on Cosmetic Surgery. However, the Department of Health, upon the experience it had working with the cosmetic surgery industry over the past 18 months, thinks that there is a form of regulation that would provide the best approach for both non-surgical treatment providers and their patients.
