People who have problems with their obesity and who undergo drastic weight loss through bariatric surgery, only solve half of the entire predicament. Yes, they lose weight, but they are left with hanging bellies, and sagging skin.
Patients who have gone through this type of surgery feel good that at last they attain the weight that they’ve always wanted, yet at the same time, they also feel that they are still fat because of all the hanging skin left by the bariatric procedure.
In the US, body-contouring procedures become a necessity after gastric bypass. Here’s what Canada.com has to say about this issue:
The most common thing Aly hears from patients is, “I’ve lost the weight. My health is better. But I still look and feel fat, because of all this hanging skin.”
In the U.S., “body contouring” after gastric bypass is the fastest growing field of plastic surgery, with 68,134 procedures performed in 2005, up 22 per cent from the previous year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Depending on the number of procedures performed, surgery can cost $10,000 to $70,000 US.
There are no comparable statistics in Canada, but “plastic surgeons in Canada don’t seem too keen to operate” on these patients, says Dr. Doug Davey, an Edmonton bariatric surgeon.Plastic surgeons are amazed at the number of patients they conduct body-contouring procedures to, most of which went through weight loss surgery.
Today, in the U.S., “the numbers are just outrageous — in an average practice, (plastic surgeons see) one or two a week. In our practice, we see 10 or 15 a week.”
But Lalonde says it’s a matter of limited resources, and priorities.
The increase of patients undergoing body-contouring procedures is somewhat overwhelming for plastic surgeons. This is also considering the fact that most of them went through gastric bypass without proper orientation on the results that they might be getting after the surgery. It is imperative then that surgeons give patients proper guidance on what to expect and what to do next after their drastic weight loss.
